Walleye Capital adds Balyasny and Millennium talent to equities unit as COO heads back to Citadel

The $17bn multi-strategy manager is building out its long-short equity business under Anil Gondi, even as its equities operating chief departs.

    HedgeWeekly Hedge Fund Desk ·

Walleye Capital, a multi-strategy hedge fund manager overseeing roughly $17 billion, has recruited two senior figures from larger rivals to strengthen its equity long-short business, according to reports published by Hedgeweek on October 19 and summarised by AlphaMaven.

Jordan Tanner, who was chief equities strategist at Balyasny Asset Management, is set to focus on linking Walleye's fundamental equities, volatility and central strategy teams, with artificial intelligence part of that remit. Anna Dev, arriving from Millennium Management, will lead the hunt for investment talent and assess opportunities to allocate to external managers. Hedgeweek reported that both are expected to start in mid-2027.

The additions come as Walleye expands its equities franchise under Anil Gondi, a former Balyasny portfolio manager. At the same time the firm is losing Matt Giannini, who served less than a year as chief operating officer of the equities division and is returning to Citadel for a third stint, according to Hedgeweek.

Why it matters: The moves show mid-sized platforms still competing hard with the largest multi-managers for senior equities and talent-sourcing staff, often with lengthy gardening leave before hires can start. For allocators, the build-out of external-manager capabilities at a firm of Walleye's size is a sign that platform-style capital deployment is spreading beyond the industry's biggest names.
